Marquis of Morés

A French nobleman, 24 years old, the Marquis de Mores, founded the town of Medora in April 1883. He so named the town because of his wife, Medora von Hoffman, daughter of a wealthy banker of New York City.

Morés of The Marquis came to Dakota Territory in early 1883 and the funding of his father, he founded the town of Medora east of the river, built a packing plant for meat, a brick factory, a hotel, stores and a huge home (Chateau de Mores) contemplating his new city. The violent influx of capital Medora signaled the end for the Little Missouri, with many traders crossing the Little Missouri to the west side of the river to the new growing city.

Despite the vision and energy of the Marquis all his various enterprises turned out to lack of funding in the winter of 1886. With his son and daughter, the Marquess and returned to France, where his other son was born.
